Local information

There are at least 20 tavernas in town. Night life is focussed on the bars and cafes clustered around the harbour, but in summer there is also a charming open-air cinema.

No package tours come to the island and no camping is permitted: the people you meet will be independent travellers like yourselves. There is also an ex-patriate population, including a few artists drawn by the beauty of the place.

If you like long walks in the real Greek countryside, Hydra is ideal. With no cars, the bulk of the population is concentrated in the port, leaving the hinterland virgin. It is quite normal to walk for four hours without seeing a soul.

Hydra is a good base from which to explore other parts of the Peloponnese. There are organised trips to the great ampitheatre of Epidaurus on the mainland where Greek plays are still performed, plus of course excursions to the Acropolis. The Temple of Apheia on Aegina and the beehive tombs of Mycenae are both worth visiting. And of course you can always slip into Athens for a little sight-seeing and shopping: the fare is about £9 each way and the journey takes just 70 minutes.
