Local information

Fishing

Tucunaré (too-coon-a-ray), as Peacock Bass are locally known, is only one of a long list of species which you can catch in the Amazon Basin. The tucunaré is known as Brazils freshwater ambassador, because its fierce top
water strikes and tackle busting power has attracted adventurous fishermen from all over the world. Reaching sizes over three feet long and upwards of 25 pounds, the beautiful Peacock Bass makes for a formidable adversary.
They regularly break 30-lb mono and super braids of 50-lb and greater strength, in addition to destroying lures, straightening hooks and split rings, even breaking rods and exploding reels. Many consider it to be the ultimate fresh water sport fish. The tucunaré (Peacock Bass) is not really
a bass, as the English name implies, but a cichlid. In the Amazon region, local scientists have identified a total of 14 different species of tucunaré. A more commonly known cichlid is the aquarium fish, Oscar, which like the Peacock is known for its aggressive behavior.

However, tucunaré are far from the only sport fish which you will be able to catch. The Amazon is home to over 2000 species of fish (some scientists say closer to 3000) many of which are not yet catalogued. About a third of these are Amazon catfish, which merited the number one rating in
In-Fisherman magazines survey of the worlds toughest freshwater sports fish. Amazon catfish include the giant Piraibas, beautiful Pirararas (Red Tailed Catfish), large migratory Jaús and top water lure striking Surabims (spotted, striped and tiger varieties).

In addition to catfish, you will have the opportunity to catch piranhas, a variety of other cichlids (peacock bass cousins), aruanas (another prehistoric hold out), traira (like walleye with teeth and an attitude), cachorras (Brazilian name for the fanged Payara) and many other species. Some anglers in the 2000/2001 season caught upwards of 15 different species in a single day of fishing. In order to increase the enjoyment and success
of your dream fishing trip, we will provide you will a tackle list optimized for conquering the Peacock Bass and other Amazon exotics.

An Unforgettable Amazon Adventure

In addition to fishing (at least five full days), you will have the opportunity to experience the worlds greatest rainforest and its wonders.

It would be a shame to travel to such a remote and exotic treasure without experiencing all that it has to offer. Our local manager and the guides will help you plan and carry out wildlife viewing, visits to native villages
and even jacaré (crocodile) hunts (catch and release).

The Amazon rainforest is home to an almost endless variety of plant and animal life, much of it uiique to the Amazon region. You will have the opportunity to view and photograph in their natural surroundings such fauna
and flora as pink dolphins, tapirs, giant otters, several kinds of monkeys, capybaras, crocodiles, macaws (most commonly scarlet and blue gold varieties), amazon festive parrots, egrets, huge muscovy ducks, hawks, ospreys, king vultures, swallows, kites, orioles, woodpeckers, herons,
iguanas, huge mahogany and brazil nut trees, graceful coconut and acaí palms, banana trees, iridescent blue morpho butterflies, giant praying mantis, huge grasshoppers, and an endless variety of other interesting
insects....but NO MOSQUITOES. In the black tannic waters where we fish and tour, mosquitoes cannot breed and it is unlikely you will even see one, much less be bitten by one. If you are lucky, you may even sight a jaguar, harpy
eagle, anaconda or manatee.

Besides enjoying the sights of such exotic creatures, each day you will be greeted with the songs of many birds as you fish in the calm black waters of a remote lagoon, river or creek (some of which are open exclusively to anglers of by special permit through our Brazilian contacts). Chattering
monkeys, squawking macaws, toucans and often the eerie roar of a howler monkey will form a background to the BHLATT...BHLATT...BHLATT of a Luhr Jensen Big Game Woodchopper lure being ripped across the glass smooth morning waters (or if you prefer the snick...snick...snick of a Rebel Jumping Minnow lure being walked across the water).

Rio Negro homesteads

As an added bonus for those who want to experience the local culture, a visit to local villages of Cablocos (mixed Indian and European people), or ribeirinhos (river dwellers), can be arranged. You can see how these friendly and happy people live off the bounties of the rainforest and the river with little regard for the ticking of a clock. Time just doesnt mean the same to them as it does to most Americans. You may even get to see how they grow and harvest the manioc root then process it to make farinha, a staple of most Brazilians even in the cities, and tapioca. Whatever experiences await you in the small villages along the river, you can be sure that you will come away with a different outlook on life.

Another popular extra that is available for your enjoyment is the jacaré (crocodile) hunt at night. The guides will takes two or three guests per boat and go spot lighting for jacaré. When the spotlights hit their eyes, the guides can judge the size by the separation of their eyes glowing back
at them from the water, or along the bank. If it isnt TOOO big, one of the guides will bring a boat along side it while another guide jumps in the water and wrestles the crocodile into submission. The guide will bring him back aboard the boat and show you how to safely hold him for photos. After a round of photos, the crocodile is released and the search is on for another one. This is an activity that seems to be as much fun for the guides as it is for the guests. A lot of good natured kidding and hoots of
excitement pierce the quiet night air, especially when a guide has gotten hold of a crocodile a little larger than he anticipated.

Whatever experiences you wish to glean from your visit to the Amazon Rainforest, our manager and staff will gladly assist you in making your stay one that you will not soon forget...and hopefully one that you will want to repeat year after year.
